The word Geography originates from the Greek words “Geo or Gaea” both meaning “Earth” and graphos meaning “to describe “or to map. Hence it can be inferred that Geography is the science of the earth i.e. the study of the surface of the earth. The location and distribution of its physical and cultural features, the aerial outlines of places, and also the interrelation of these features as they influence the human population.
How to be
The minimum qualification for taking up Geography is 10+2 with high marks in the particular subject. Reflecting the broad scope of geography degrees, you’ll find them either as a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc) or at Post Graduate level A master of Arts (MA) or Master of Science (MSc). Often the BA and MA options correspond to human geography focus while BSc/MSc is in the physical geography field.

Cartography: Careers in Cartography involve developing and producing different types of maps, as well as producing related diagrams, charts, spreadsheets, and travel guides. You may not need a PG degree or previous experience to pursue this job, but you may find it helpful to have completed a specialized degree in topics such as remote sensing or some practical experience. The salary of a cartographer starts from 10,000-15,000 per month.
Environmental Consultant: Env. Consultants work to ensure that their commercial or government clients comply with regulations, and address a variety of environmental issues. Work experience would be very beneficial for entry in this role, with potential employers including water-related organizations and the govt.
Town Planner: As a town planner, one may deal with the management and development not only of the town but also cities, villages, and rural areas. You’ll put your analytical skills and knowledge of the environment into use to improve existing infrastructure and find solutions to environmental issues. You are likely to need a PG degree specialization with regional planning to enter this job.
Teacher/Lecturer: Those who are interested in teaching Geography are the best option for them. They need a MA/MSc degree UGC NET, B.Ed degree. So they are eligible for teaching primary level to the university level. They can also go for a PhD
Civil Service: Geography has been always a favorite and mandatory subject for civil examinations.
