History as a Career Option

History as a subject studies the societies and culture of a certain time period or long periods of time, to improve our understanding of the past. Although one will be amazed to learn history opens up such amazing career opportunities like law, publishing journalism, museum, teaching, advertising, work in the development sector, global charity work, etc.

 History can be divided into three major specializations- archaeology, museology, and archival studies. To take the subject as a major subject in the degree level students should have the subject as core one in 10+2 level. After having a degree in history students can specialize above three fields.

Here are some career options students can go for after a degree in history:

1.Archaeology: The work of archaeologists can be research-based or field-related.  The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) employs archaeologists and is responsible for the maintenance of 3,600 monuments, state department of archaeology of different state Governments, heritage bodies, museums ad other research institutions. The monthly income of an archaeologist starts from 20000-45000.

 

2.Museology: museologists or specialists in museology are the ones who deal with the design, organization, and management of museums. Their work is related to research administration and public relations. The National Museum Institute (New Delhi) offers Masters’s in museology. The monthly average income of a museologist is Rs.25,000- 30,000

 

3.Museum Curators: Museum curators specialize in natural history, metals, terracotta, textiles, paintings, and other related things. It also includes the maintenance of records of each time. For instance, from where it has discovered, its estimated age, conservation methods, etc. the monthly income of a museum curator is Rs.15,600-39,100.

 

4. Archivist: Archivists are experts in preservation, repairing parchment papers, paper manuscripts, and microfilming documents.. they got work in museums, libraries, the National Archives of India, and different state archives. The monthly income of an archivist is Rs 32,000-48,000

 

5.Historian: A historian’s job is to study and research history and communicate it through written or published works. The criterion of becoming a historian is a BA in History and a master in a specific area such as political history, military history, etc. the monthly income of a historian is Rs. 30,000-40,000

 

History Experts: there is a tremendous demand for history experts in film industries, who could undertake costumes, jewelry, movie sets. These experts work closely with the director and cinematographer. The monthly income of a history expert is Rs. 15,000-20,000

 

7.Teachers: those who have an interest in teaching have to pursue a master’s degree and then clear the NET examination. And should have pursued Bed. So they can teach from the level of primary school to the university level. the monthly income of a history professor is Rs. 50,000-60,000

 

8. Civil service: history has always been a favorite subject for the Civil Service Examination like UPSC, particularly for the main exam.

 

Some preferable institutions for studying the subject of history in India are – Delhi University, Serampore College and University, Institute of Archaeology in New Delhi, Jamia Milia Islamia University,  JNU.
